Description: Gorgeous Limited edition, one of only 24 hand painted copies. Part of a larger limitation of 225 deluxe copies printed on Japon Vellum containing the suite of illustrations in two states, this being number 20. Publisher's deluxe binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Quarter tan morocco over patterned paper-covered boards, with titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. "One of 24 copies hand-painted" in manuscript red ink to the limitation page. Illustrated with two sets of six captioned tissue-guarded plates by Stuart Blanch, with one set hand-coloured and numerous head-pieces, the first hand-coloured. A very good copy, with penciled bookseller’s note to corner of front free endpaper. Inner hinges slightly separated (see photo) but binding still firmly attached. Cover condition excellent. The contents are wonderfully clean and bright throughout, and the plates remain bold and fresh. An exceptionally attractive copy. Signed by the editor, N. M. Penzer, and illustrator, Stuart Blanch, in ink to the limitation page. A beautifully produced edition of Lucian's satirical dialogues, embellished with a suite of exquisitely hand painted semi-erotic plates. Lesley Blanch was a noted author and travel writer but also an artist, she had studied at art school alongside Rex Whistler and Oliver Messel. She designed book jackets for TS Eliot at Faber and provided Whistler-like illustrations for the Golden Cockerel Dryden under a pseudonym. A lovely book.
