Description: Three-page letter datelined "London, 5 Weymouth Place, New Kent Road, May 17th 1846" but with a London "PAID" Maltese Cross dated June 17, 1846 (exactly one month later than the dateline) and with a Liverpool exit marking dated June 18th. I believe that the manuscript mark at the right of the obverse is a "1/-" mark for one shilling. No United States Entry markings. Addressed to "Robert Philips, Esq., care Mr. Josiah Wheeler, Pewaukee, Prarieville Post Office, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin Territory, North America." and "U.S." has been added in a different manuscript. Content: "Dear Sir, As you may not know who the devil this is from, I will begin at the end and sign my name (H. E. Harwood) and perhaps by remembering the North Midland Railway Derby & Sheffield Stations, the subsequent breaking up of Mr. Thompson's staff, the packing up our journey to London, yours to America, you will get in right train of thought to hear from the old world. I am induced to adopt this style of beginning as you promised to write and let us know how you got on in the new world and we have often talked of you & thought we should like to hear of your well doing, which I trust on the receipt of this you will favor us with an account. I have never heard anything of our W. Wood, perhaps you can enlighten me. "As I don't feel certain this will reach you, I will promise to be more confidential in the next should you let me hear from you. "You may like to hear I am still with Mr. Thompson who after the two years of Railway depression (which you have I hope likely escaped) finds his business prosperous again in this unusually active Railway time. "Your old employer Mr. Phipps is Engineer on the Eastern Counties. "Mr. Marshall Locomotive Superintendent on the Norfolk line. "Mr. Hartland has gone to Ireland with Mr. Leishman's Railway making and plenty of other changes which I hope to tell you of some other time. "As I have a brother a gold and silver refiner who has some idea of going to America, I should be much obliged by your giving and information and your expertise of the means and chances of immigration. "Hoping yourself, wife and family of which I supposed has increased are will and prosperous and kind rememberances to any friends of ours you may have with you. Believe Me, Yours Sincerely H. E.
