Description: DC COMICS DC Studios Cinematic DC Universe Movie Character KeySUPERMAN (2025): Green Lantern Guy Gardner Ever since late January 2023, when DC Studios Creative Head JAMES GUNN presented his initial slate of films and streaming "TV" series for the all-new cinematic DC Universe, DC Fandom has known that Earth's first two representatives in the GREEN LANTERN CORPS -- Hal Jordan and John Stewart -- would be among the heroes starring in Gunn's "Gods and Monsters - Chapter One." Their future HBO Max series, Lanterns, would be an integral part of moving the overall plot of Chapter One forward. Lanterns, however, wouldn't be among the new DCU's very first offerings. That honor rightly fell to SUPERMAN, a film with the primary goals of establishing the tone and setting of the new DCU as well as introducing its greatest hero, SUPERMAN. The film recently announced its cast, with young actor DAVID CORENSWET slated as the DC's latest Man of Steel. Corenswet, a perfect choice in so many ways, was not a surprise to fans. But what did catch everyone off-guard was the concurrent news that Gunn's film would feature at least four (4) other DC heroes never seen before in live-action, and among was an "ultra-macho, red-headed and red-blooded American male" by the name of GUY DARRIN GARDNER, the third man from Earth to also be known as a GREEN LANTERN. He'd be portrayed by actor Nathan Fillion. An unlikeable guy, Gardner - who was Introduced in Green Lantern #59 (1968) - was one of two potential candidates chosen by Green Lantern ABIN SUR's ring to succeed him upon his death. The other, Hal Jordan, was geographically closer, so the ring chose him. Gardner later receives his own ring as is trained as a back-up for Hal Jordan, but a mishap in the field eventually lands him into a coma. John Stewart is then selected as Hal's new back-up, eventually becoming his indefinite replacement as Earth's main Green Lantern. The events of the paragraph you just read took over a decade to play out in the Green Lantern ongoing series, and they undoubtedly will factor heavily into the backstory of Fillion's character. They also effectively resume here, in Green Lantern #196, as in the immediate aftermath of Crisis On Infinite Earths, both Jordan and Stewart are off the board and Gardner, back to health, gets the ring all to himself. It continues the story that began in Green Lantern #195, in which Gardner is reinstated as an active Green Lantern.Aside from the issue's amazing Gardner solo cover and its "announcement" of Gardner's new status and the attitude he has about it, the story occurs at a critical point in Gardner's development as a GL. The Superman announcement has seen this book explode in recent weeks, with High-Grade copies disappearing quickly.
