Description: Offered here is a graphite drawing with blue watercolor overlay of a tall 18th century man in contemporary costume. This drawing appears to be an illustration, possibly for stage design purpose. In the upper left corner the words "Rev. Witherspoon" is written in pencil, followed by the following notations: "Black wool all but collar and lace cuff (bit plain) Hat practical". In the lower left corner may be the signature of the artist/illustrator although I cannot make out the name. Revered John Witherspoon (1723-1795) was a Scottish minister who at 45 years of age became the 6th president of Princeton University, then a small school called the "College of New Jersey". Witherspoon, active politically, was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and a signatory to the Declaration of Independence. One of the main streets in Princeton today is Witherspoon Street. This drawing is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". For example, offered maps are of the period. Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
