Description: For your consideration is an antique spelter Newel Post lamp from the late 1800's.It is a graceful sculpture of a youth standing on a rock with a lion. It stands27" tall and the base measures 5 1/2" across. The base is wooden and haswear from age. There is a plaque attached to it, however, time and light haveerased some of the letters. The piece itself was never signed. I would suggestthis was the work of French sculptor Auguste Moreau (1834-1917). There is astrong resemblance to his other works. The plaque reads La Monique?? There are several small holes created in casting. One is on the top of the headof the youth, the other in the backside, in the mouth/ top of lion head, and oneeach in the bottom of each foot of the statue. The metal base has a few tiny holesalso. The right arm was repaired at some point, however it does not detract The lamp shade has "holophane" stamped into the glass. This was a specialshade created in France by a scientist, Andre Bondel and engineer SpiridionPsaroudaki in the 1890's being famous for it's luminescent qualities. I cannotsay if this was original to the lamp. Light wear to lamp rim. The electric cord isnewer and has a line switch. Gorgeous and one of a kind. Please see photos.
