Description: Gorgeous Georgian Antique Sampler with a beautiful intricate and finely worked floral border with rosebuds and a range of flowers, similar floral style to Norfolk school borders. A range of spot motifs including lions, birds, dogs, flowers and trees, uplifting verse, interesting layout. Completed by Ann Jones in 1812. Good colours for age of 212 years. A finely executed sampler.Antique oak frame with old glass. A beautiful sampler in good condition and very finely worked. The floral border is very pretty indeed and quite eye catching on the wall.Please zoom in to appreciate the delicate flowers Ann has stitched. In the upper portion of the sampler `Ann has stitched the popular and uplifting verse: "Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first effort of an infants handAnd while her fingers on the canvas move Engage her tender heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her have a part And write thy name thyself upon her heart" Below she has signed her name and date, with flowers above and either side and a line beneath``; "Ann Jones 1812" She has then worked a pretty meandering floral border with a thin border line on the sides and base to create a rectangular shape into which she has worked flying birds, trees ,tall flowers worked in red and cream, dogs, pairs of birds facing each other on flower urns, and lions. Stitch work throughout is very fine and a wonderful legacy to Anns skills with a needle. The quaility of the stitch work is very fine, colours remain good for age ,as does colour of background linen.Sampler conserved on cotton on museum board. Oak frame in good condition, waxed and with good patina. Please see photos, this is a very pretty sampler indeed.
