Description: This is a gorgeous blown art glass piece made by the Artist Shahid Kahn when he had his studio in Oakland California. This vase is so very unusual and mesmerizing to look at, I can’t imagine just quite how he accomplished the cane application, as well as the tiniest neck of a bottle or balloon vase I have seen. As you hold it and turn it in the light you find something interesting to see from every new angle you turn it to. This is truly a not just a vase but a work of art that I am hoping will find a home that will display it both safely, and to its best advantage. This piece would be stunning in a cabinet with glass shelves and downward facing lights. There appears to be no damage I can see to this piece, at the tiny neck of the bottle there is a thin line that I do not know what it is, but it appears to be something on the inside of the neck, left over from manufacturing. I think it is a thin line of clear glass I put it in the last two pictures of the red vase. If you look at the one in the bright light you can see it, and see it appears to be a streak of clear glass. I am also enclosing a picture of some other pieces that match this vase in other colors, it is amazing he was able to repeat this design with each being alike, and yet so individually different.( This items for the red and white vase only)The bottom of the vase is signed with KS 2017. I would suggest looking him up and reading about him. I also found that it was in 2017 that Khan and Alvarez took part in “The State of Glass Art,” an exhibition at Columbus’ Hawk Galleries. So this vase would have been made in that year. Thanks for looking, and please feel free to ask any questions, and if your familiar with his work I would love to hear anything about weather he is still making pieces, as I know he has stated that learning and teaching were big priorities for him, and he is apparently still teaching at Denison University. Below is some short things I found written about him. DIMENSIONS: 7.5” wide approx, by 7.5” deep, by 8.5” tall ABOUT THE ARTIST: Shahid Khan was born in Ahmadabad, India, and moved to Columbus as a young child. He received his MFA degree from The Ohio State University in 2021. Khan's glassblowing practice is internationally community oriented and tied to techniques and tradition. He has taken a journeyman approach to learn - apprenticing with top glass artists in Denmark, Japan, and Canada. He has had exhibits in Philadelphia, Austin, and Palm Springs, as well as here in Columbus. He has run glass studios and businesses and taught at OSU AN ARTIST STATEMENT WRITTEN ABOUT GLASS ARTIST SHAHID KHAN: Emma Laube, curator of a show with Khan's work explains, "The suggestion of utility engenders the impulse to categorize - but why? Khan's objects raise more questions than they answer, and that may just be the point: with too ready a resolution, we foreclose on possibility. What is the difference, Khan's work asks, between multivalence and ambivalence? Why do we talk about the unknown in negative terms? Confusion is often famed as an aberration in the otherwise seamless process of communication. But what if it's the end goal - or, at the very least, a pretty good place to wind up along the way? If we stay alert, Khan's work reminds us, misidentification is useful. After all, don't I foreclose upon myself as a viewer if I fail to remain curious?"
