ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Extremely Rare Antique 1927 Halftone Lithograph of the Famous Frigate Ship, titled, “1797-“Old Ironsides” U.S. Frigate Constitution-1927.”, after the original oil painting by the well-known listed marine painter, ‘Gordon Grant’ (American, 1875-1962), whose printed signature appears lower-left in the image corner. About the Painting: In 1926, Gordon Grant was initially commissioned to create a painting of ‘Old Ironsides’ while at sea, and it was subsequently reproduced and sold. The Committee initially sold these prints of the Gordon Grant painting of the U.S. Frigate Constitution for .25¢ each (equals about $4.20 in today’s dollar for 2023) and later doubled the price to .50¢ each. The initial problem with that effort was that the production of the prints failed to meet expected demand with the production exceeding demand, which left the committee with a lot of extra prints to contend with. To combat the problem, a large sales force of 200 people was quickly setup to travel across the country seeking additional venues to sell the extra prints to. In the end, the print sales generated about $292,000 total and over 1 million prints were eventually sold. Grant’s original painting hangs in the White House. (Source: navyhistory site, “2012/08/pennies-for-old-ironsides”; and Hoi Polloi: A Literary Journal for The Rest of Us, by Robert McNulty, Editor). The famous American author & poet, Oliver Wendell Holmes (American, 1809-1894), wrote his famous poem about the ship, titled, “Old Ironsides” on September 16, 1830 which saved the ship from destruction because it was deemed unfit for service (see poem & the author’s history below). Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high, And many an eye has danced to see That banner in the sky; Beneath it rung the battle shout, And burst the cannon's roar; The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered bulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail, And give her to the god of storms, The lightning and the gale! AUTHOR'S NOTE: By Oliver Wendell Holmes. This was the popular name by which the frigate Constitution was known. The poem was first printed in the Boston Daily Advertiser, at the time when it was proposed to break up the old ship as unfit for service. I subjoin the paragraph which led to the writing of the poem. It is from the Advertiser, Tuesday, September 14, 1830:— "Old Ironsides.— It has been affirmed upon good authority that the Secretary of the Navy has recommended to the Board of Navy Commissioners to dispose of the frigate Constitution. Since it has been understood that such a step was in contemplation we have heard but one opinion expressed, and that in decided disapprobation of the measure. Such a national object of interest, so endeared to our national pride as Old Ironsides is, should never by any act of our government cease to belong to the Navy, so long as our country is to be found upon the map of nations. In England it was lately determined by the Admiralty to cut the Victory, a one-hundred gun ship (which it will be recollected bore the flag of Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar), down to a seventy-four, but so loud were the lamentations of the people upon the proposed measure that the intention was abandoned. We confidently anticipate that the Secretary of the Navy will in like manner consult the general wish in regard to the Constitution, and either let her remain in ordinary or rebuild her whenever the public service may require." —New York Journal of Commerce. Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s copyright, date, artist’s initials & publisher name, ‘© 1927 By G.G., U.S.P. & L. Co.’ (For: United States Printing & Lithograph Co.), appears printed in the lower-left outer margin just beneath the image; The title appears printed lower middle; and the painting reproduction info along with the ‘Save Ironsides Fund’ & rights info, ‘Reproduced from the original painting by Gordon Grant by direction of the National Committee—“Save Old Ironsides” Fund, under authority granted by Act of Congress, copyrighted and all rights reserved.’, appears printed lower-right respectively (Side Note: It was two years after the ship was restored in March of 1925, by an act of Congress). The Print is on a nice medium-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with margins is 18-13/16” x 22-3/4”, Image size is 16-7/8” x 20-5/8” (with light thin yellow border). The Print is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade—fresh vibrant color & tones! This Print has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition—what a beauty! This will look stunning framed up! No tears! Extremely minimal (maybe a dozen or so) of faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which aren’t that noticeable and aren’t really worth mentioning. Ultra-minimal & very slight small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which also aren’t even noticeable (except mostly from behind) and also aren’t worth mentioning. other extremely minimal & slight small creases here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges and small dog-ear bends in a few outer margin corners as well as some various colored printing ink-offset specks scattered here & there which are basically noticeable in the outer margins—all outer margin issues are basically negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible/no real or significant toning of the paper stock from age noticeable, especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This gorgeous antique print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early.
