Description: Leroy Gordon ''Gordo'' Cooper Jr. [1927 2004] was an United States Air Force officer, fighter pilot, test pilot, who was selected as one of the original seven astronauts for NASA's Project Mercury in 1959. Cooper flew on the Mercury-Atlas 9 on May 15 1963, [Faith 7] which was the longest and the last Mercury flight. Cooper spent 34 hours in space and was the first American to sleep in space and the last to launch on a solo orbital mission. Cooper flew again as the commander of Gemini 5 Mission in 1965 where they spent eight days in space, showing that astronauts could survive in space for the length of time necessary to travel to the moon and back.
