Description: Gold Carnelian Pendant Cameo Grand Tour Greek Art High Karat Yellow Gold Setting 5 cm diameter 2 mm thick 18.2 grams Masterfully carved carnelian cameo of a Greek mythical theme. Hades was both the name of the ancient Greek god of the underworld (Roman name: Pluto) and the name of the shadowy place below the earth which was considered the final destination for the souls of the dead. The expertly carved scene shows Hades dragging Persephone away from Demeter (her mother) to his underworld kingdom to be his Queen. He is riding in a cart/craft that is being pulled by a Hippocampus which was a mythical creature composed of half horse and half fish. The detail is complex, beautiful and excellently carved! The condition is superb in general although there are a couple of inclusions in the beautiful multi-color layers of carnelian stone. Nice toning on the high karat gold. A wonderful piece of antique Grand Tour mythically inspired jewelry! Free shipping. --------------------------------------- I only ship to addresses in the USA.
