Description: "Gloria Grahame: Bad Girl of Film Noir" (2011, McFarland and Co.) is my third movie reference work. It is not a biography of the Academy Award-winning actress, though it certainly has personal information sprinkled throughout, but a commentary on her long, productive film and television career. Gloria, who grew up in Hollywood, was determined to become an actress from an early age, and after touring in stage productions, and a few appearances in "Soundies" (short films; the precursors to music videos) made her first feature film in 1944. Within a few years she had made a genuine classic, "It's a Wonderful Life," and earned an Academy Award nomination for "Crossfire." The 1950s were her golden era, co-starring with Humphrey Bogart in "In a Lonely Place," training elephants in "The Greatest Show on Earth," menacing Joan Crawford in "Sudden Fear," winning an Oscar for "The Bad and the Beautiful," delivering her finest performance in the underrated classic "The Big Heat," singing her heart out one note at a time in "Oklahoma!" and heating up the screen in such potboilers as "Naked Alibi," "Human Desire," "Prisoners of the Casbah" and "Odds Against Tomorrow." Gloria's tumultuous personal life overshadowed her career from the late 1950s through the 1970s, though she guested in several television series and low-budget films during that time. She continued to tour in regional theatre productions and spent some time in England, appearing in British productions as well. Just before her 1981 death she made a couple of memorable movies, "Chilly Scenes of Winter" and "Melvin and Howard," but she was sickened by a recurrence of cancer, which killed her. All in all she was a terrific, often underrated actress who made almost every movie she appeared in better for her presence, and some into classics. The book contains 83 photographs and / or artwork illustrations, an appendix for made-for-TV movies, miniseries and specials, as well as for her other television appearances, an appendix on stage appearances, plus a detailed bibliography of sources for each film and an index. The books are unused; they have been in storage for years and I am attempting to lower my inventory. I will be happy to inscribe one upon request. Any copy I sell will be signed. Shipping costs will be combined for multiple items. International shipping is available at a flat rate of $25. If the actual cost is significantly less than that, money will be refunded. I have two other movie reference books that I am offering in separate listings: "Korean War Filmography" (2003) and "Lee Marvin: His Films and Career" (2000). I am also offering other parts of my movie memorabilia collection on eBay: CD soundtracks, DVDs and movie stills. I will be adding press kits, pressbooks, other movie reference books, laserdiscs and other items as I can process them into listings. I try to list these items at reasonable rates, describing their condition as accurately as possible. If you have interest, please consider adding something to your own library or collection.
