Description: TITLE: 'HOTTENTOTE AVEC LE PRETENDU TABLIER' FROM 'IL COSTUME ANTICO E MODERNO' ARTIST: GIULIO FERRARIO MEDIUM: Original etching with original hand-colouring DATE: 1817-26EDITION: First editionSIZE: Sheet Size: 35.4cm x 25.5cm Image Size: 23.3cm x 16.8cm DESCRIPTION: Shows a woman of the Khoikhoi or Khoekhoe with 'sinus pudoris'. This was also known as a 'Hottentot Apron'. The suppressed plate from the first edition which was larger in size than the reprints which covered over the female 'apron'. Ready for framing. Original etching with aquatint and original hand-colouring. Very minor marks to the margins of plate surface. Blind stamp of Boston Reference Library to the corner of the margin which does affect the image but as it is a blind-stamp rather than an ink stamp it is not obtrusive. In very good indeed, clean condition overall with bright hand-colouring and no offsetting. A very scarce and desirable plate from the first edition of this ground-breaking and important work.
