Description: This 1920 era Makah/Nootka cedar bark & bear grass market basket is extremely large,a whopping 11" high x 13" wide and 9" deep. It is woven from 1" strips of cedar bark and bound together with bear grass and thin vertical strips of cedar bark. Count five strips up from the bottom and notice the weaver has inserted a 2.25" band of tightly woven bear grass. This band tells the story of the tribe going in dugout canoes on the water to hunt whale. Three passengers can be seen chasing a whale just ahead of them. This scene is played out on each side of the basket. A duck and bird are woven into the colorful band at each end of the basket as well. The top rim of the basket is woven tightly with more bear grass while the bottom of the basket is woven of 1" strips of cedar bark in a basket weave design. The cedar bark weaving is still holding together well and has the gorgeous glossy finish. I don't believe this basket has ever been used because it is very clean inside, just a little dusty. There is some fraying of the cedar bark here and there and a small number of vertical weaves have given out but the cedar bark horizontal straps are in very good condition and are held firmly in place. It is in remarkably fine shape for a basket over 100 year old. A special find for any advanced basket collector. It is 11" high x 13" wide x 9" deep.
