Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The Ju 88 was probably Germany’s best medium bomber of WW II. It started with a requirement for a fast, medium bomber in 1935 with the design started in January 1936 and the first flight of the prototype V1 on the 21st of December. It was designed by W. H. Evers and an American, Al Gassmer, who happened to be visiting in Europe in 1935-36. The Ju 88 design turned out to be one of the most versatile of all the airplanes serving in WW II. The Luftwaffe requirement that all bombers be capable of dive bombing handicapped most of their developments, but seems to have added to the Ju 88 design. The plants began to tool up for production in 1938 and the first unit, I/KG 25, was equipped in the summer of 1939. The Ju-88 entered was in service with several groups in time for the Battle of Britain. One of its major weaknesses was its lack of defensive armament which caused massive losses at that time..The Ju 88 was used as a bomber, dive bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, heavy fighter and guided bomb. About 15,000 were built and the Finnish Air Force used them for training until 1948.
