Description: FURKA - OBERALP Glacier Express Artist: OTTO ERNST (1884-1967) Printer: A. Trüb & Cie., Aarau Offset Lithograph ca. 1920's The same poster just sold at Swann's Gallery for $2750 (with buyer's premium) on 2/24/2022. One of the most spectacular Swiss railway lines was opened in two stages: the Brig-Gletsch route on July 1, 1915 and the Gletsch-Disentis route on July 4, 1926, connecting the Rhone and the Rhine via two passes. The Rhone Glacier was undisputedly the big attraction - it gave the Furka-Oberalp Railway, as it is officially called, the distinctive name "Glacier Express". Otto Ernst's style and graphic implementation was an excellent image of the daring railway builders typical of the time. Otto ERNST was born in 1884 in he Swiss canton of Aargau. After his apprenticeship as a graphic designer, he studied in Florence and in Paris where in 1910 he became a student of Eugène Grasset at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He worked both in the printing industry and as a freelance painter and graphic designer and travelled extensively throughout Europe, capturing his impressions in his paintings. Ernst’s posters are characterised by a realistic style. Size: 39 1/4x25 1/2 inches, 99 3/4x64 cm. Professionally mounted on linen backing. In excellent condition.
