Description: As served in the American Revolution, and about identical to Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, #62.S. Brass hilt made in two pieces which the author describes as the earliest of these. 23 ¼” wedge section slightly curved blade with long false edge in leather blade seat. Completely unmarked. This pattern was adopted in 1767, as the “grenadier’s saber”, based on those in use. Grenadiers, originally chosen for their physical size and strength, were, by this time, essentially “heavy infantry”, made up of the largest and most physically skilled, used to lead assaults and in particular in siege warfare. As the pattern predates its adoption as a standard, these early examples may have served in the French and Indian War as well. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
