This pattern was adopted in 1767, as the “grenadier’s saber”, based on those in use. Grenadiers, originally chosen for their physical size and strength, were, by this time, essentially “heavy infantry”, made up of the largest and most physically skilled, used to lead assaults and in particular in siege warfare.
