He was so taken with her, that he painted her twice in similar settings. This is Version #1. About the Artist and Model: Black Woman with Peonies is a painting by Frédéric Bazille, produced in late spring 1870, a few months before the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War which would claim his life. It has been in the Musée Fabre, in Montpellier, since 1918. It is an oil on canvas. In the year that he painted it, Bazille created another, similar, image with the same model, currently in the collection of the National Gallery of Art. He may have conceived both works as a tribute to Manet. Both paintings make use of peonies, a type of flower Édouard Manet grew in his garden and painted frequently. The model who posed for Bazille is unidentified, but is the same model who posed for Thomas Eakins's painting Female Model (1867–1869), in which she wears the same headscarf and earring seen in Young Woman with PeoniesJean Frédéric Bazille (1841 –1870) was a French Impressionist painter. Many of Bazille's major works are examples of figure painting in which he placed the subject figure within a landscape painted en plein air Studio in Rue de La Condamine, 1870, Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Frédéric Bazille was born in Montpellier, France, into a wealthy wine merchant family. Bazille moved to Paris in 1862 to study medicine. There he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley, was drawn to Impressionist painting, and began taking classes in Charles Gleyre's studio. After failing his medical exam in 1864, he began painting full-time. His close friends included Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Édouard Manet. Bazille was generous with his wealth and helped support his less fortunate associates by giving them space in his studio and materials to use Frédéric Bazille joined a Zouave regiment in August 1870, a month after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. On November 28 of that year, he was with his unit when, his officer having been injured, he took command and led an assault on the Germans. He was hit twice in the failed attack and died on the battlefield at the age of twenty-eight. A very collectible, marvelous piece of Art which will look beautiful in any setting.
