His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Virginia. His publishing career began, albeit humbly, with the anonymous collection of poems "Tamerlane and Other Poems" credited only to "a Bostonian." This volume includes all his famous poems, including "Tamerlane," "Spirits of the Dead," "Fairy-Land," "The Bells," "Annabel Lee," "Eldorado," "Sonnet--Silence," "To Helen," "Israfel," "Lenore," and perhaps his most loved poem, "The Raven."
