Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Charles Dickens's "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby," a COLLECTOR'S edition, introduced by Dame Sybil Thorndike, Illustrated with Thirty-nine illustrations by Phiz, one of the OXFORD LIBRARY OF CHARLES DICKENS series, limited to seventy-five hundred sets, published in 1983. Bound in scarlet red leather, the book has matching French moire silk end leaves, gold tooling around the silk end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. Dickens' third novel, "Nicolas Nickleby" is the story of a young man whose father has died and left his family penniless. Nicholas is honest and steadfaast, but his youth and inexperience of the world leads him to be violent, naive, and emotional. He is a young man of impetuous temper and is devoted to his friends and family. Nicholas' uncle, RALPH NICKLEBY, cares about nothing but money and takes an immediate dislike to the idealistic Nicholas; however, he does harbor something of a soft spot for Kate, Nicholas' sister. Ralph was very angry over Nicholas' beating of Wackford Squeers, and Ralph deliberately schemes to hurt and humilate Nicholas. Ralph ultimately learns that Smike was his son and that the boy died hating him. Ralph then takes his own life, dying without a will. The family refuses to take his property, so his hard-earned fortune is taken by the Crown and lost. Nicholas and Kate's mother, Catherine, provides much of the novel's comic relief. She is stubborn and prone to long digressions on irrelevant or unimportant topics, but she is also delightful. Kate is a fairly passive character, but she shares some of her brother's fortitude and strong will and she defends herself against the lecherous Sir Mulberry Hawk. She finds well-deserved happiness with Frank Cheeryble. Other characters include: Newman Noggs, Ralph's clerk, who was once a gentleman but has lost his money; Lord Verisopht, a truly evil character; Lord Frederick Verisophy, a rich young nobleman who owes both Ralph and Sir Mulberry vast sums of money; Mr. Pluck and Mr. Pyke, hangers-on to Hawk and Verisopht; Arthur Gride, an elderly associate of Ralph's; Peg Sliderskew, Gride's elderly housekeeper, illiterate, very deaf, and extremely frugal; and Brooker, an old beggar and ex-convict, who extorts money from Ralph because he knows Ralph is the father of Smike. 871 pages.
