McELRATH A5.1.a. A novel of romance and Arctic adventure, including a doomed attempt to reach the North Pole; the book was something of a departure from Norris's typical social themes and was both a critical and commercial failure. All copies in the first printing have a cancelled title page, which Blanck interprets thus: "The title page is a cancel...the reason therefor not known to BAL. The note on p.viii may hold a clue: 'The following novel was completed March 22, 1899, and sent to the printed in October of the same year. After the plates hada been made notice was received that a play called A Man's Woman had been writen by Mrs. Crawford Flexner...as it was impossible to change the name of the novel at the time this notice was received, it has been published under its original title."
