Description: France: Lot of Five French Patriotic Medals for the Crimean War 1854-1856. Five scarce bronze patriotic medals commemorating French participation in the Crimean War. France and Great Britain declared war on Russia on March 28, 1854, joining the Ottoman Empire. Russia, Great Britain, Sardinia and Turkey all issued campaign medals for the Crimean War, but France did not; these unofficial medals come close:1) Silvered 24 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Napoleon III, and a reverse featuring an allegorical winged figure holding a flag before a defeated, prostrate enemy. The exergue of the medal is dated 1854 in Roman numerals; most of the silver gilt is gone, but still in near extremely fine condition; on a replacement ribbon of the French national colors. 2) Bronze 23 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Marshal Aimable Pélissier, commander-in-chief of the French army in the Crimea. The reverse depicts the French storming of the Malakoff, a key Russian redoubt in Sebastopol, on September 8, 1854. The capture of the Malakoff resulted in the surrender of Sebastopol a day later, September 9th. The medal is in extremely fine condition, and is on a very old red ribbon. 3) Bronze 23 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Napoleon III, maker-marked, “Robineau Rue S Louis101.” The reverse inscription celebrates the fall of Sebastopol; on a replacement ribbon of the French national colors. 4) Bronze 23 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Napoleon III, with a reverse commemorating the Paris Peace Treaty of March 30, 1856, which ended the Crimean War. The medal is in near extremely fine condition, on a replacement ribbon of the French national colors. 5) Bronze 23 mm bronze medal with an obverse of Napoleon III. The reverse celebrates the French capture of the Malakoff, the fall of Sebastopol on September 9th and the brave Allied armies; the medal is in near extremely fine condition.
