Troisième Émission 1920 - 1923 for 0F,50 - In superb almost Uncirculated condition. PMG Grade* AU58. RARE EMERGENCY ISSUE FRENCH NOTE From the post WW1 Period. Catalogue Reference : - Pirot#34-16 RARE NOTE - Chambres de Commerce de Caen et Honfleur. 50 Centimes denomination. Troisième Émission . Dated 1920 - 1923 Size:- 93 x 63mm Note is in Shades of Red on a Pink background on the face and the reverse, in a fairly ornate picture frame style border, all on White paper. The paper is watermarked with the iconic Bees motif, used as symbol of France, often on some of the Emergency banknotes issues by the Chambres de Commerce. It implies hard work and diligence. This symbol is considered to be one of the oldest emblems of the sovereigns of France, in use for centuries on and off, perhaps most famously, by the Emperor Napoléon. . SERIE C and Serial number 567,760 are at the lower left and right respectively, in Black on the face. At the upper centre on the face is an official very Light Brown circular handstamp which was applied at the time of issue to validate the note - it has the names and both the Coats of Arms of Caen and Honfleur in the centre of it, a reversed image of this circular handstamp shows through on the reverse side of the note. The denomination as 0F,50 is large at the upper centre, in solid Red. At the upper left and right corners of the note is the denomination as '0.50’ in White set at an angle, reversed out of Red squares. At the bottom centre of the note are the respective Coats of Arms of Caen at the left of centre and Honfleur at the right. The reverse has the denomination as '0F,50' at each corner in White reversed out of Red, again set at an angle in the squares. The dates of circulation 1920 and 1923 appear at the upper left and right, between the dates is the reverse image of the Coat of Arms in light Brown. Below there is text at the lower centre as follows - 'Ce Billet est délivre et échangé contre des Billets de la Banque de France dans ses Succursales et Bureaux Auxiliaires du Département du Calvados' - Meaning that - 'this note is issued and exchanged for Bank de France notes in both its branches and auxiliary offices in the department of Calvados '. TROISIEME EMISSION appears on solid Red at the bottom centre in the frame of the note. The note is signed on the face by both Les Présidents of the respective Chambres de Commerce at the centre left and right, respectively. Note was produced and printed by the firm of Les Papeteries de Normandie whose factory was located in Grand-Quevilly, near Rouen in Normandy. Their name appears in tiny letters on the face of the note at the bottom left corner in the margin. The name of an associate company A.Mouville & Cie. CAEN appears at the bottom right. This old Emergency banknote is clean, crisp and bright. It has seen minimal handling, it has straight and sharp edges and corners. It has a light vertical bend at the right otherwise it appears to have seen no circulation. It has no blemishes and is fully intact with none of the commonly found pinholes, that are usually present on French notes of the period that have been in circulation. The note therefore grades almost uncirculated. This is a superb note and is a highly collectible example of a sometimes hard to find type! HISTORICAL NOTES:- Billets de Nécessite and other Emergency notes were issued in Europe - predominantly in France, during and after World War One from about 1914 and up to the early 1920's, they were used in towns and regions in place of coins which during wartime became scarce as the metal was needed for industry, their use by and large became redundant by the mid 1920's as the economies began to recover following the privations of Wartime. On most of them there was an issue date with details of the date and time they could be re exchanged for regular currency issued by the Banque de France or other Central Bank. There are hundreds of different types, they were issued mainly in denominations of 50c, 1 Franc and 2 Francs. They are interesting historic documents. The same issues were often printed on any paper that was to hand, sometimes of poor quality, even lined paper from School exercise books, tissue paper, tracing paper and cardboard were used on occasion. PINHOLES:- Most French notes of the period inevitably had pinholes because of the quirky way that shops used to deal with banknotes, when a customer paid for an item with notes, a receipt was always given and a copy kept by the retailer to which he stapled or pinned the banknote. The practise had generally died out in France by the 1980's, but it still goes on in some shops in rural areas to this day!! I ALWAYS COMBINE POSTAGE COSTS ON MULTIPLE WINS _ PLEASE DO NOT PAY FOR ITEMS UNTIL YOU RECEIVE MY COMBINED POSTAGE INVOICE IF YOU ARE BIDDING ON MORE THAN ONE ITEM! IMPORTANT - All my items are sent to the UK from my current location in Italy by Certificated Airmail for safety reasons, and INTERNATIONAL BUYERS, please note that any item or group of items which totals more than £30 will have to be sent by insured delivery for the safety and security of your item - there can be I am afraid no exceptions to this. Please note that as a matter of course I do not now post to some countries where the postal system seems to be unreliable. Therefore, those buyers from RUSSIA, CHINA, INDIA, BANGLADESH, PAKISTAN, ISRAEL, INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, SAUDI ARABIA, MEXICO & CHILE who wish to bid on my notes will have to contact me first and be aware that any items won will be sent by chargeable INSURED TRACKABLE postage. This is because at least 30% of items sent to buyers in these locations in the last few years for some reason do not arrive. The cost of insurance will add about £10 to the cost of the item. I always combine postage and shipping on more than one item won. If you think my postage and shipping charges are unreasonable then please contact me before you make a bid. For full details of shipping and postage costs to UK and other European destinations and all other addresses Worldwide, please refer to the Payment Instructions below:- PAYMENT - Please pay through the eBay system using your preferred payment method. In exceptional circumstances I may accept £, US$, € at current rates or a personal cheque drawn in £ on a UK registered Bank, please contact me first if you wish to pay this way. Shipping/handling: UK and Europe:£2.49 for ordinary untracked Airmail or £6.30 for registered/insured (Necessary for all items or groups of items with a value exceeding £20). Rest of World: £3.49 for regular mail of up to 20 grams weight sent by untracked Airmail or £10.90 for registered mail (seller’s risk, necessary for all items or groups of items with a value exceeding £20). Multiple wins/items are batched and sent at no extra cost, unless weight is significantly higher, above 20 grams. NB. Please do not pay until you receive my invoice, especially if you have won more than one item, as I always combine the postage packing and shipping costs, so that you save on postage. I do of course appreciate it if you pay quickly but I am sure you wouldn't want to be paying too much for postage. If you do overpay, I will usually refund you through the eBay system, before I send your item or items. A note about feedback I do not wait for you to leave Feedback for me like some sellers do, so Transactions will receive positive feedback soon after payment is made. I strive to earn 100% perfect ‘five-star’ scores from you, my customer. The star scores are very important because eBay uses them to determine the visibility of my items in search results. So, before you leave your Feedback for me, if anything about the transaction did not meet your expectations, please let me know and at least give me the chance to put things right, before leaving negative Feedback or contacting eBay. Always contact me first before contacting eBay or opening a case, I will always help, I will block bidders who open cases without contacting me first! PLEASE NOTE ALL ITEMS ARE NOW USUALLY MAILED FROM MY CURRENT LOCATION IN ITALY, posted the same day that payment is received or the next working day after payment, if made at the weekend. When I am in the UK, I may post from there. Some deliveries may take longer than normal to arrive, this is not my fault, merely the result of the WELL KNOWN problems since March 2020, experienced within the International Postal System! Although, happily now, the International Postal system is mostly working normally again, however there still can be the odd delay to some destinations. Normally deliveries in the UK and Europe will be within 2 to 3 weeks and to the rest of the World within 3 to 4 weeks, in many cases sooner than these timings. ______________ _____________________________________________________
