Description: Very rare cabinet card of a typical cavalry trooper of the late Indian Wars era. The trooper pictured is Cyrus Lovell Buchanan (1877-1954). Buchanan, a plasterer by trade, enlisted in Troop C, Eighth U. S. Cavalry, at Freedom, Indiana, on May 13, 1898. According to the enlistments register, he was 21 years old, stood five feet four inches tall, and had blue eyes. Buchanan was assigned to Troop C as a trumpeter. Troop C was then on garrison duty at Fort Yates, North Dakota, which is where young Private Buchanan had his image made by photographer J. W. Gilbert. Buchanan holds the standard issue .30-40 Krag-Jorgensen carbine. Around his waist is a cartridge belt with a holstered revolver. Leaning on the column next to Buchanan is his cavalry sabre. A truly wonderful vintage cabinet card of a fully armed Eighth Cavalry trooper. In October, 1898, Troop C was sent to Cuba for garrison duty. When the troop passed through Fargo, the local newspaper reported that, "They are a hardy lot and were nice looking fellows. Two or three of the officers seemed overweight but the majority of the men were trim built, wiry fellows." Like the famed Rough Riders under Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, who went to Cuba before them, Troop C was sent to Cuba without its horses. Troop C saw garrison duty at Las Minas, Cuba. On July 16, 1899, Trumpeter Buchanan was discharged at Puerto Principe, Cuba. He died at age 76 at the Veterans' Hospital, Jefferson Barracks, and is buried at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Very good overall condition. Light foxing around edges of image. SEE PHOTOS; they form part of condition description.
