Born March 15, 1923, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Arthur and Edith (Dittman) Muchow, he attended South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City; SDSC, Brookings; Washington Univ., St. Louis, MO; and Northrop Aeronautical, CA. Howard enlisted in the US Army Air Force in 1942, graduated Pilot School, 1944, as a 2nd Lt. He piloted B-17’s in the 385th HBG in Europe from 1944-1945. After 35 missions, losing his original crew and being shot down twice in Germany, he returned to the US in 1945. He was a founding member of the S.D. Air Guard and maintained his flying status in the AF Reserves. Howard served as Air Provost Marshal of Seoul, Korea, during the Korean War. He retired as a Lt. Col., USAF in 1972, after numerous decorations and awards. Several of Howard’s achievements included induction into the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame. He was founder and president of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 806, Spearfish, where he built and flew his own plane. He served on the Lawrence County Airport Board for 17 years, and was President of the S.D. Emergency Mgmt. Assoc. Howard retired as Director of Emergency Services of Lawrence County after 12 years. His recently completed his book, “Forever Yours — If I make It Home Alive,” a collection of stories of his tour of duty as a B-17 pilot, including the love letters sent home to his new bride during WWII.
