Description: Pale Pink Colored Optical Calcite (Fluorescent & Phosphorescent) - Location: Nuevo Leon Mexico. Large Thumbnail to small Miniature (see photo for more details). Here we have a specimen of pale pinkish optical calcite. The crystal is a cleaved section of a much larger chunk of optical (transparent) calcite. The most stunning property of optical calcite is 'double refraction'. When something is written on some paper such as the word 'Calcite' and viewed through the transparent calcite the image (or in this case the written word Calcite) is separated into two distinct images. What make this specimen even more 'special' is that it will fluoresce a nice bluish violet color with SHORT wave ultraviolet light (see photo) and a nice pink color under LONG wave ultraviolet light (see photo). The specimen will also phosphoresce after exposure to short wave ultraviolet light for a brief time. Phosphorescence is a specific type of photoluminescence related to fluorescence. Unlike fluorescence a phosphorescent material does not immediately re-emit the radiation it absorbs. It releases the energy over a longer time after the light source has been removed which may vary from a second or two to sometimes hours or more. This is definitely 'interesting' stuff!
