Description: Don't bite off more than you can chew! A rare and large fish aspiration from the Green River Formation in Wyoming. These fossils are from the Eocene Period around 50 million years ago. Aspiration fossils are some of the best fossil's due to them telling a story. Two species in a fight or a struggle captured in time. The larger fish is probably a Mioplosus species and the smaller fish is a Knightia species. The bones are non-restored with some missing (which is very common among "split-level" fish specimens), and the negative/concave impressions are there. Some of the brown color between the bones might be a result of a much older preparation practice, and thus is natural, with some stain that was added (which was a common practice years ago to create a more visually-appealing specimen). The matrix measures 12" x 5.5" x .75" thick. The fish measure 10" long. The larger fish fossil measures 8" long x 2.375" at it's widest and the total matrix weighs 4.3 lbs. The fossils are in excellent condition and come with a Riker box display. Fossil Inventory We have a wonderful, diverse collection of inherited fossils to offer. Our interests and passions are a very important part of who we are. These positive emotions drive us. They give us meaning and something to look forward to. Curating for an item that is significant to history is very honorable. Historical items need curators, making us part of their preservation process. Authentic or Fabricated or Both Many commercially acquired fossil specimens will often have incorrect (accidentally or deliberately) locality labels. Many of them are mosaics, made from several specimens or they're heavily restored. We have several specimens in various degrees of completeness and fabricated reconstruction, along with many great specimens that are entirely or largely untouched. Each fossil listed has been thoroughly inspected and researched to provide you with a detailed description. Any concerns, uncertainty, or reconstruction areas will be noted in the description.
