Description: THE HOLY BIBLE IN MODERN ENGLISH [Fenton Bible AA Leather Goatskin] Containing the Complete Sacred Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments Translated into English Direct from the Original Hebrew, Chaldee and Greek Author: Fenton, Ferrar Title: THE HOLY BIBLE IN MODERN ENGLISH [Fenton Bible AA Leather Goatskin] Containing the Complete Sacred Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments Translated into English Direct from the Original Hebrew, Chaldee and Greek Publication: Adam & Charles Black / Oxford University Press, 1946 Description: Leather. Finely Rebound by AA Leather in Antique Sandalwood Goatskin Leather with dark brown liner, two place ribbons. Original art gilt edges. Occasional penciling and just a few pages with pen checks, some tanning to the pages of Genesis but very bright and fresh thereafter, suggesting a transition to a different paper occured at this point in the printing. Fenton's translation first appeared with Paul's Epistles in 1882 and completed with full Old and New Testaments in 1903. Fenton's was one of the first Modern Speech editions prepared by a single translator, following shortly after Weymouth's 1902 version. Fenton was a business man and was self-taught in the Biblical Languages. His somewhat rude comprehension of Hebrew grammar shows through in some literalistic renderings such as 'By Periods God created that which produced the Solar System' ... while Semiticists might have choked on some of these rude renderings, their uniqueness found an eager reception that would prefigure the enthusiasm shown for unique phrasing in the Amplified Bible or the Message. Fenton also endorses some unorthodox textual critical readings, such as the priority of a Hebrew original from which the Greek text of John's Gospel was translated. Fenton's canonical ordering follows the Hebrew TANAKH order for the OT, and an idiosyncratic NT order, beginning with John's Gospel and the First Johannine epistle, The Synoptics + Acts, Letters of Paul, and then the remaining General Epistles and Revelation. The Psalms, uniquely, are in Iambic Pantameter. Fenton's Bible was reprinted many times over through the first half of the century. On its popularity F.F. Bruce speculates, 'perhaps it was the fact that it was the work of an amateur (in the best sense of the word), for in biblical and theological studies, even more than in others there is a widespread feeling that to be an 'expert' positively disqualifies a man from the right to a serious hearing on the subject' (History of the Bible in English, p. 161). In spite of this popularity, it has not been reprinted by a Bible publisher in 75 years, leaving the supply in trade very dry, especially fine-binding copies. [Darlow & Moule 2128; Hills. NEAR FINE.
