Lane discussing the problems in his department. Early Typed Letter Signed: "Felix Frankfurter", 1p, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1913 December 26. To Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane, Washington, D.C. In full: "May I express to you the delight with which I read your first report - the vivid focussing (sic) on the central problem of your department, no less than the detailed persuasiveness with which you analyzed the legislative needs of the problem. I wonder if you can spare me six copies which I should like to put in the hands of people who would be six more nuclei of the needed public opinion. With the season's best wishes." Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965) graduated first in the Harvard Law School class of 1906. After a short time in private practice, he worked for three years as an Assistant United States Attorney in New York under Henry L. Stimson. In 1911, when Stimson was appointed Secretary of War by President Taft, Frankfurter moved to Washington, D.C. and joined the War Department as a legal counsel. He wrote this letter in 1913 on War Department, Bureau of Insular Affairs stationery during the Wilson presidency. In 1914, Frankfurter joined the faculty of the Harvard Law School. He remained at Harvard until his appointment as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. Frankfurter retired in 1962. Faint pencil erasure in upper left corner. Staple holes to left of letterhead. Receipt date stamp touches typed date. Otherwise, fine condition.
