Description: This is a beautiful, cobalt decorated salt glaze dry storage one gallon size crock from Strassburg, Virginia, in the upper Schandoah Valley. It has a deep inset neck where a string or cord could be tied to hold a cloth tight over the mouth. It is a perfect pantry size and would have been used to store dry goods such as sugar, flour, cornmeal, wheat, or other kitchen staples. It is 9.5" ht. x 6" d., weighs 5 lbs. 3 oz. and has a beautiful, downward swept cobalt floral design around the body below a single, incised line on the shoulder. The capacity mark"1" is impressed on the shoulder and matches what the famous potters Hickerson and Eberly are known to have used, although other have used the same imprint tool. The heavy, even salt glaze gives it a nice, shiny orange peel and a few fantastic firing flaws set off the cobalt florals and add visual interest. The base is a pulled cross-loop wire cut, a style also used by Hickerson and Eberly. Taking everything into account, I attribute this great piece to Eberly, whose pottery was the most prolific in Strasburg from 1881 to the 1890s. Collecting antique stoneware has become more popular with pieces being found in barns, old houses, cellars and at estate sales but most stoneware coming onto the market is damaged in some way. This handsome, well-proportioned Shenandoah Valley crock has nice cobalt decorations and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations which makes it a rare find. It could be a terrific addition to a collection or an eye-catching standalone piece! Domestic shipping is via USPS Priority Mail, or choose Ground Advantage, UPS Ground or UPS Next Day Air.
