Description: Extremely Rare Officer's Silver Button American Revolution Period 10th Dragoons Measuring just under 22 mm and weighing 3.39 g, this is a rare example of a silvered officer's button from the 10th Dragoons during the Revolutionary War period. The only time this button could have been issued was between 1768 and 1783. Given the unit's limited size with only a few officers, it may be possible to trace this button back to a specific officer with proper research. This is a base metal button with close-plating (Sheffield plating), as was common for officers' buttons during that period. It features an attractive greenish patina on the back and a fully intact, robust shank. On the obverse, almost all of the silver sheet remains, making it an exceptionally attractive example from this Dragoon unit. I believe there are only a few extant examples of this officer's button (see the photo from a specialized military button site, where it is referred to as "an exceptionally rare example"). Unfortunately, the 10th Dragoons never made it to America, as far as my knowledge goes. Nevertheless, this button will display well alongside other American Revolution items, owing to its preservation and rarity, which require no apology. A superb piece!
