Description: About this work: An exceptional 18th century portrait of a lady in purple by an artist in the circle of Francis Cotes (British, 1726-1770). This work depicts the fashionable woman with a large hairstyle and accompanying pearl/veil adornment, which wraps around her shoulders. She stands next to a wonderfully painted vase of flowers, reminiscent of early Dutch still lifes. She is set against a partially abstracted background with a hint of foliage in the upper left. The work is oil on canvas and is housed in an excellent antique gilt frame with a small plaque reading “Francis Cotes 1726-1770”. There are several torn/indiscernible labels and markings on the reverse. Size: 30 inches tall by 24 7/8 inches wide (painting) 37 inches tall by 32 inches wide by 2 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Private estate, Delaware; Acquired from the above Condition: Good overall antique condition. Relined. Stable surface craquelure throughout commensurate with age. Scattered inpainting throughout. Antique frame with typical wear and touch up. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
