This charming work depicts a fashionable woman with short, curly, black hair and a white dress. She sits in a yellow upholstered armchair near a matching yellow curtain. She gestures towards her small dog, which wears a red collar and sits atop a blue pillow. While apparently unsigned, the work is painted in wonderful, crisp detail. Both the sitter’s fashion and the painting’s style fit firmly within the French Empire taste around 1810. The work is oil on canvas and is housed in a beautiful antique wood and gesso frame. Size: 13 inches tall by 11 inches wide (painting) 21 inches tall by 19.5 inches wide by 3 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Private collection, CT; Acquired from the above Condition: Good overall condition. Wax relined. Scattered inpainting, difficult to see restoration through varnish under blacklight. Antique frame with wear and losses to decoration and gesso/gilding (one area pictured for reference, but there are other small losses too). It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
