Description: A wonderful early modernist etching by Austrian artist Arthur Paunzen (1890-1940). I suspect this work is from the series Paunzen etched that was inspired by Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. A haunting image that includes a human skeleton, the etching is hand signed and numbered in pencil by the artist in the lower margin. The plate measures 8 x 6 1/2 inches, sheet size is approx. 15 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches and it is printed in black ink on very fine wove paper or imitation Japan paper. It is in excellent condition, no mat burn or tape residue - it does not appear to have ever been framed or matted. Arthur Paunzen (1890-1940) was a Jewish Austrian etcher, engraver and ex-libris artist. He studied with Ludwig Koch in Vienna and in France, at the Académie Julian, under Jean-Pierre Laurens. Later, he traveled throughout Italy, studying art and architecture. In 1918, shortly after he began exhibiting, he married Cornelia Westreich (1894-1971) in Vienna. An interest in music led Paunzen to create a number of works that convey the music of Beethoven and Mahler as symbolic images. His interests also extended to literature, including a series of etchings depicting Raskolnikov, from Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. In 1938, when Hitler annexed Austria, Paunzen and his wife emigrated to Great Britain. In 1940, despite their being Jewish, they were designated enemy aliens and confined to the Central Internment Camp on the Isle of Man. Paunzen died there in August 1940 of pneumonia, coupled with neglect. Etchings by Paunzen are included in the permanent collections of the British Museum, London; the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin; the Stockholm Engraving Collection at the Nationalmuseet; the Albertina Museum, Vienna; and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
