Description: This 2016 Lincoln cent has a die clash on the obverse. A die clash occurs when, because no planchet was ejected by the hopper, the obverse and reverse dies collide. The result is a portion of the image from one or both dies to be imprinted on the opposing die. In the case of this coin, some of the shield lines from the reverse image were transferred to the obverse die, but the reverse die only got a couple of cracks in it. The obverse of this penny looks identical to the obverse of tdc-1c-2016-01 at the maddieclashes.com website. The machinery that the U.S. Mint uses to produce coins is designed to hold the dies at a certain clearance so that they don't ever collide, so that every coin of each denomination looks the same as every other one produced in that year. Since a die clash produces coins with an altered image, it is not within mint tolerance and is considered a true error.
