ENGLISH AESTHETIC MOVEMENT 16" Platter POLYCHROME Ridgways Devonshire Has Crack

Description: What a find, even in less than perfect condition! This hefty polychrome (multi-colored) platter, about 12" by 16" in size, is a wonderful example of design from the late 1800s Aesthetic Movement period in Great Britain. Produced in 1885 by Ridgways in Stoke-on-Trent, the pattern is called "Devonshire" and it features a transferware design with hand-colored accents of rust, yellow, orange and deep pink. (Most pieces in this pattern are simply brown and white; it is rare to find the polychrome examples.) The platter's colors are still vivid; the off-white background is somewhat darkened with age and crazing. There is a significant crack in one corner, most visible on the back but you can see it on the front. This platter would look great on a shelf or hanging on a wall. Among the most well known names related to the movement are William Morris, James McNeill Whistler and Oscar Wilde. The European fascination with all things Japanese was revitalized during this period and those elements are evident in this ceramic pattern: the flat panel, or cartouche; asymmetric placement of design elements; natural depictions such as birds, plants, water and flowers.
