Hohe & Brugger, approx. 1851. Format (rolled Chinese paper): 270 x 205 mm. (Image format: 180 x 155 mm). Sheet size: 350 x 270 mm. Language: German Order number: 146616 Remarks: *Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, Duchess of Bavaria (also Sisi or Sissi) was a princess of the House of Wittelsbach and, through her marriage to Franz Joseph I, Empress of Austria from 1854. - This is one of the early portraits of girls aged approx. 13 to 14 years in Munich, even before the Austrian Crown Prince Franz Joseph met her. The present portrait was probably created based on a contemporary photograph. There are several lithographic variants of this view and pose (on the chair in a checkered dress) based on the same model. The Bavarian painter and lithographer Friedrich Hohe (1802-1870) shows the face of the later Empress of Austria here with still very girlish features. The other variants in the same pose do not bear Friedrich Hohe's lithographer's name and there Elisabeth's face is depicted as more mature and more like a young woman. The present early variant (image credit: ÖNB PORT_00052040_01) appears to be very rare, an example from the House of Wittelsbach (Tegernsee Castle). - Full margins, clean and in very good condition.
