It is the work of mint engraver Frank Gasparro whose monogram appears under the neck. In the early 1970's contests were held to design the reverses of the Bicentennial quarter, half-dollar and dollar coins. Below is an excerpt from the US Mint press release."The Bicentennial dollar, picturing the Liberty Bell and moon on the reverse and the double date 1776-1976 beneath the portrait of President Eisenhower on the obverse, goes into circulation beginning October 13, 1975, Mrs. Mary Brooks, Director of the Mint, announced today" (October 1, 1975)."The new dollar coins should begin appearing at commercial banks throughout the nation within the next week or two.The clad dollar’s debut at commercial banks serviced through the Federal Reserve System completes the initial distributions of the three circulating coins authorized by Congress to carry designs and dates emblematic of the Bicentennial of the American Revolution." An effort to resume the 90% Silver Peace dollar in 1964 failed to come to fruition. In 1971, a coin to honor both President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the first moon landing was authorized. Chief Engraver of the US Mint, Frank Gasparro, whose initials are on the truncation of the neck, and below the eagle designed the coin. After the 1971 issue, the dies were redesigned several times by changing the relief, strengthening the design, and making the Earth above the eagle more clearly defined. The obverse is a left facing portrait of Eisenhower during his Presidency. The reverse is an adaptation of the official Apollo 11 Mission insignia. 3. The redesign of the coin made for three variations: · Variety I – Low relief design with flattened Earth and three islands off the Florida coast used for all 1971 issues, Uncirculated Silver clad issues of 1971, and most copper-nickel coinage in 1972. · Variety II – High relief dies with a more round Earth and weak or indistinct islands were used for most 1971 proofs, all silver-clad 1972 issues, and some very few Philadelphia Mint issues of the business strike (Copper-Nickel) variety in 1972. · Variety III – Improved high relief design were used for late 1972 Philadelphia copper-nickel coins and all subsequent coinage. 4. The national significance of the Bicentennial of the United States was highlighted with the adoption of new reverse designs for the Quarter, Half-Dollar and Dollar coins. Nearly a thousand entries were submitted after the Treasury announced a contest in October 1973. The field was narrowed to twelve designs for each of the coins. The judges chose the rendition of the Liberty Bell superimposed on the moon for the Eisenhower dollar. This is the work of artist Dennis R. Williams. The only change to the obverse was a dual date of 1776-1976 which was used for all coinage struck in 1975 and 1976. The lettering was redesigned in 1975 to produce a more attractive design.
