Edwin Booth's "PLAYERS" 100th Anniversary / First Women Members 1989 Playbill

Description: This is a rare playbill from the "ALL STAR CENTENNIAL SALUTE" in Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of "THE PLAYERS" at the Shubert Theatre in New York City on April 23rd, 1989 ..... "The Players" is a private social club founded by the noted 19th century Shakespearean actor EDWIN BOOTH in 1888. Booth purchased an 1847 mansion at 16 Gramercy Park, reserved an upper floor as his residence, and turned the remaining floors into a clubhouse ..... The 100th Anniversary event, hosted by JOSE FERRER, was significant as the club was inviting women members for the first time in it's history. HELEN HAYES was awarded the Edwin Booth Award for Lifetime Achievement, an honor which had never been bestowed on a woman until 1989. The playbill includes an insert with the names of the other women who were invited to become members that year including LAUREN BACALL, CAROL BURNETT, AGNES de MILLE, LILLIAN GISH, JUNE HAVOC, ANGELA LANSBURY, MARY TYLER MOORE, LEONTYNE PRICE and GWEN VERDON. Among those escorting the new female members were DICK CAVETT, HOWARD COSELL, ALFRED DRAKE, AL HIRSCHFELD, BURGESS MEREDITH, HAROLD PRINCE, JASON ROBARDS and ELI WALLACH ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 5 5/8" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, list of entertainers and the Master of Ceremonies, promotional text and a wonderful AL HIRSCHFELD cover illustration of EDWIN BOOTH. Also includes the list of the new female inductees ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
