SMITH, THE CAPTAIN OF THE R.M.S. TITANIC WHO DIED WHEN THE SHIP SANK Document signed by, “E.J. Smith,” issuing a certificate of discharge to Thomas Riley, a fireman aboard the S.S. Majestic traveling roundtrip from Liverpool to New York between December 2 to 23, 1896. Printed near the bottom is a certification statement which reads, “I certify that the above particulars are correct and that the above named Seaman was discharged accordingly, and that the character described hereon is a true copy of the Report concerning the said Seaman.” Contains one page, measures 7.75 by 6 inches, created on December 24, 1896, countersigned by a shipping representative, bears two “V.G.” stamps in areas for character of conduct and ability, and in very good condition with soiling, staining, creasing, and a small area of paper loss near the center left border.
