Poynter to Sir James Paget Publication: 1885 Description: Autograph Letter Signed from Edward J. Poynter to Sir James Paget, 1885Evidence of former adhesion to bottom corners, a few faint spots of toning: very good or better condition. 7" x 4.5"A nice handwritten letter from noted painter Edward J. Poynter to Sir James Paget (1814-1899), surgeon-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, dated the 15th of June 1885.Sir Edward John Poynter was born in Paris in 1836, but his parents returned to England very soon thereafter. He studied in London, Rome and Paris, and was best known for his large historical paintings including a mosaic for the Central Lobby of the Palace of Westminster, depicting St George and the Dragon, as well as "Israel in Egypt" (1867, held at London's Guildhall Art Gallery) and the 1869 work "St George for England." Poynter served as President of the Royal Academy and, from 1894 to 1904, as director of the National Gallery, overseeing the opening of the Tate. He received a knighthood in 1896 and in 1902 was made a Baronet in the city of Westminster. He also published three books on art and painting and died in 1919.Paget is considered one of the founders of scientific medical pathology and was President of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society from 1875 to 1877. In 1887, two years after the present letter was written, he was elected President of the Pathological Society of London. The letter reads in full:My dear Sir James Paget,I have had anxious strong letters in favour of Mr. Gilkes, & he seems a most eligible man - but there are other good candidates in the field one of whom was very nearly elected on the last occasion. Yours very trulyEdward J. PoynterWe are unsure as to what election the letter refers, but the 1885 United Kingdom general election, held November-December 1885, was the first general election after the Representation of the People Act of 1884 and the ensuing redistribution of seats. It also saw the socialist party participate for the first time.Letters written by Poynter are scarce, and scattered among institutions including the Getty and the V&A. A lovely piece of ephemera noting communications between two important UK citizens.
