Description: EDITH MARTINEAU (British - United Kingdom - 1842-1909). 19th Century Watercolor. Landscape with Sheep grazing and a Cottage on the Hill seen through the Forest Trees, 6-1/2" x 5" sight size watercolor (framed size: 11" x 10") signed/dated lower left: E. Martineau 1884. Pencil inscription on the back of the frame. Condition: The painting appears to have slipped down slightly at the very top and a light line is showing there with a speck of white on the upper left corner, a few tiny dot spots, mat has a waterstain at bottom left, a few other light mat stains and mat toning, frame has slight natural discoloration, not viewed out of frame. Edith Martineau was born in 1842. Edith and her sister Gertrude were part of a small group of female artists closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Together they held an exhibition of views around the family estate at Rothiemurchus, Aviemore, at The Modern Gallery, Bond Street, London, in 1906.Edith was the first woman to be admitted to The Royal Academy School, and was a prolific exhibitor at The Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society, and elsewhere. Her father was Dr James Martineau, the noted Unitarian theologian and minister. He moved to The Polchar, Rothiemurchus, Aviemore where Edith and her sister worked for many years.
