Description: Edith HEATH Ceramics (San Francisco)SET - SMALL & MEDIUM "MOONSTONE" RIM LINE OPEN BAKERS The enduring Rim Line, designed in the 1960's. Functional, clean, and great for nesting, these baker bowls will give any table setting an air of rustic beauty. They feature a distinctively Heath exposed clay rim on pieces glazed in Moonstone. Expect lovely variation in the Moonstone glazes. These pieces are Discontinued and rare to find in Moonstone (rim line) glazing! About Edit Heath / Heath Ceramics: In 1944 Edith Heath, then 33, was teaching at San Francisco’s Presidio Hill School during the day and offering ceramics courses in the evenings at the once-famous California Labor School. That spring, she met Jermayne MacAgy, the acting director of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum, who invited Heath to exhibit her ceramics at the museum in the fall. The exhibition opened on September 1 and ran an entire month. In the 200 pieces shown, Heath focused on tea services, salad sets, and bowls, whose repetition of shape simplified the daunting task of production. Alongside these basics were objects including vases, candleholders, square-shaped plates, a water pitcher, decanter, and beer jug with coordinating mugs. Edith, along with her husband Brian, eventually founded Heath Ceramics in 1948. Over the next 50 years, the factory would produce as many as 90 different dinnerware shapes and almost 50 glazes. By 1993, after a series of health issues, the Heaths stepped away for the most part, leaving the studio in the hands of its well-trained employees. Without Edith and Brian, however, the spirit of Heath began to diminish, and many wondered whether the business could continue, or even remain relevant. A decade later, enter industrial designers Catherine Bailey and Robin Petravic, who felt something was missing from their own design experiences. Dimensions: Medium - 9.25" diameter (rim) x 7 5/8" diameter (interior) x 2.25" tall; Small - 7.25" diameter (rim) x 5.75" diameter (interior) x 2.25" tall; 3 lb 7 oz. Condition: Excellent, like new. Displayed only. Never used. No damage, except the medium baker has a small chip on the rim of the base (see Listing photos) but does not extend to the visible exterior of the baker.
