Mick Morahan’s maternal grandfather, his grandfather’s brother and father-in-law were engineers on the railroad. It is no wonder that Mick was interested in the Australian railway system. In fact, one of his relations was the first engineer to drive a Baldwin O class diesel engine down the main street of Binnaway. His story is included in the book including the derailment. Many of the photographs included in this book were taken by the author with box cameras, single lens reflex cameras, and finally a Zeiss “2 ¼ ‘square”. Mick has been involved with several railway organizations as an assistant editor and contributor of articles. The intent of Early Diesel & Electric Locomotives of the NSWGR is to produce a publication that will entertain the reader. The reason the author writes this way is that he believes that to most readers, railways are a hobby, not profession. Throughout the book he sought out retired railway men to record their reminiscences for posterity and to show the human side of railways.
