Description: Author: [Hastings, Charles Edward]. Title: A BIOGRAPHY OF DAVID WARK GRIFFITH AND A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MOTION PICTURE IN AMERICA. [Cover and caption title.]. Publication: [New York: Exhibitor's Trade Review; distributed by D.W. Griffith Service, 1920]. Description: Quarto-sized pamphlet measuring 30.8 x 23.6 cm (approx. 12 x 9 in.). 36 pages; illustrations printed with the text. Original printed wraps with a portrait of Griffith on the front cover. Good plus. Front wrap shows light foxing and toning and some faint offsetting (from contact with another publication previously stored with this item); uneven marginal browning to rear wrap. A few minuscule edge tears to wraps; tiny chip to the unprinted rear wrap. Central horizontal crease throughout. (One other trade copy we have encountered and the digital reproduction of the Univ. of Iowa copy both have such a crease and it was possibly the result of the distributor folding the pamphlet for mailing.) A few tiny fore-edge tears, most of which are associated with the crease. Small stain to the portrait of Richard Barthelmess; a few minor marginal smudges. Several instances of ghosting (printer's error), most evident on the margin of p. [10] and unobtrusive elsewhere. FIRST EDITION. An attractively illustrated review of D.W. Griffith's career and one of the earliest separately published biographies of the filmmaker. Hastings' account (beginning on p. [5] with the caption title, "David Wark Griffith") was reprinted from the Exhibitor's Trade Review. In his research for the piece, Hastings was assisted by Griffith's staff and was given access to the proof sheets of Robert Edgar Long's forthcoming book, David Wark Griffith: a Brief Sketch of his Career, which was issued the same year. Lesley Mason provides a long sentiment about Griffith on p. [1] and an unsigned foreword on p. [3] discusses the historical significance of the invention of motion pictures. The numerous photographs include full-page portraits of actors, Lillian Gish, Robert Harron, Richard Barthelmess, Clarine Seymour, Carol Dempster, and Creighton Hale; cinematographer, "Billy" Bitzer; and Griffith himself. There is also a composite of Griffith's staff, production scenes, movie stills, etc. Rather scarce. OCLC locates only three copies (Univ. of Iowa, Margaret Herrick Library, and Danish Film Institute); not found in NUC.
