It is a perennial, floating, slightly succulent, aquatic plant. It typically grows in dense colonies and often forms a mat on the surface of the water. The plant is represented by a smooth, circular-shaped, flat disc that is about 1.5-1 cm broad. It gives rise to several tiny roots and a pouch that consists of both female and male flowers. A female flower is made of one pistil, and a male flower consists of a single stamen. They have no sepals or petals. Both types of flowers are encircled by small membranous spathes. The blossom time usually lasts from early summer to early autumn. The female flowers are followed by little fruits that are about 1-1.5 mm long. There are usually 1-2 ribbed seeds in each fruit.
