Description: Kennedy (1812–1889) was born in Scotland and immigrated to the United States in 1833 where he began the manufacture and sale of “Kennedy's Medical Discovery,” a compound derived from burdock root which was said to “cure every disease that flesh is heir to 'except thunder humor'. Like many other cure-alls of the era, the product consisted of roots and herbs steeped in water and alcohol. The paper label for a bottle announced that it was “A Medicine for Humors,” suggested it opened “the channels of the body” to remove “obstructions in the liver, bowels, kidneys and glands.” I don’t know what “thunder humor” is but it must have been bad. This was a successful medicine, and the bottles are big and bold. This one is older, I would say from the 1880s. It is a rich aqua color and stands 9” tall and 3 ¼” across. The embossing is large and bold “DR KENNEDY’S/MEDICAL DISCOVERY/ROXBURY MASS”. The base has a hinge mold with an indent embossed with a 9 or a 6. The bottom is uneven with seed bubbles and larger bubbles throughout rising to a stretchy neck and sloppy tapered collar lip. It is in dug condition with some swirling haze inside and out. There is no damage. It is just an impressive example of a great patent medicine.
