Disney Scholastic photoplay books: Old Yeller, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Description: For sale here are two photoplay editions of classic novels that were made into films by Disney, both published by Scholastic. The first title is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Fred Gipson. The cover features a photo from the 1968 film starring Dick Van Dyke. Ian Fleming, of James Bond fame, wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang while convalescing from a heart attack. Sadly, after the novel was finished but before it was published, Fleming died of further heart complications. The novel began publication just two months after Fleming's death. It is a radical departure from Fleming's spy adventure novels, telling the fantastic tale of a family and their renovated sports car that develops both a personality and a wide array of unexpected powers, including flight. The family has an adventure in which they confront and defeat a cabal of gangsters. Old Yeller was written by Fred Gipson and published in 1956. It was adapted into a Disney film the following year. The novel is probably the most famous and beloved "dog story" ever published in the U.S., although (spoiler alert) many a child has been traumatized by the film's tragic third act. This Scholastic edition features a production still from the film featuring Kevin Corcoran as Arliss Coates, the younger of the two boys who adopt Old Yeller. Corcoran was a prolific Disney child actor, appearing also in The Swiss Family Robinson and The Shaggy Dog. Here are the condition notes: Both are in very good used condition. Exteriors show moderate wear, particularly around the edges. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has a couple of dents in the front cover, a small tear at the right center of the front cover, and a small crease in the top corner of the back cover. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang interior is clean and unmarked throughout with lightly tanned pages. Old Yeller has an owner name inscribed in ink on the inside front cover but is otherwise clean and unmarked throughout. Both have tight bindings with no creasing or breaking of the glue.
