'The Circle · A Collection' not only invites you to browse, look and browse, but also gives the reader a unique insight into the living conditions of gay men in the middle of the 20th century. In 1942, Karl Meier founded the 'Kreis' in Zurich. By the 1960s, the Swiss gay association had developed into an internationally networked organization that supported its members with advice and action and attracted attention from clandestine gay men from all over the world, and the trilingual magazine 'Der Kreis' praised the beauty of men and shared the experiences of a life in secret. 'Der Kreis' was published monthly for 25 years, between 1943 and 1967. During the Second World War and for several years afterward, 'Der Kreis' was the only homosexual magazine ever. The original magazine was published by editor Karl MEIER (aka "Rolf") in German, French and English and contained articles on literature, art and culture and each edition contained photographs and artwork, many by renowned artists. Photographs by George Platt Lynes, Quaintance, Harry Bush, Werner Bandi, Jean Genet, Jean Cocteau, Don Whitman, Bruce Bellas, Alison Delarue, "Jim", Richard Alan, Kris Studio Chuck Renslow, as well as many amateur photographers. In Hubert Kennedy's book The Ideal Gay Man, which chronicles the history of Der Kreis, Kennedy describes the magazine as having been "the world's most important journal promoting the legal and social rights of gay men" for much of its publication period and one of very few such journals in Europe at the time. Additionally, it remains the only gay publication to include editorial content in three languages. (Wikipedia) In 2014, the magazine's history was documented in a Swiss docudrama film eponymously titled The Circle. The film, which features a mix of historical footage from the 1950s and dramatizations of events, won the Teddy Award and the Panorama Audience Award in the documentary category at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.
