They published top-30 lists sent to them by radio stations, which subscribed at a cost of a few hundred dollars a year. They also published the CMJ New Music Monthly which was a magazine that included interviews, reviews, special features and, often, a "new release" CD. The music series on Compact Disc was dedicated to the birth and growth of Alternative music. Tracks included rare and hard to get independent releases. There were pages in the magazine that had a short write up on each of the bands along with the track list that could be cut out and put into a jewel case with the CD.
