In this charming and poignant novel that “oozes charm and wit and speaks beautifully about friendship and love, and the differences between the two” (Laura Pearson, author of I Wanted You to Know), teenager Emmie Blue releases a balloon with her email address and a big secret into the sky, only to fall head-over-heels for the boy who finds it. But fourteen years later, everything Emmie has planned is up in the air. At sixteen, Emmie Blue stood in the fields of her school and released a red balloon into the sky. Attached was her name, her email address…and a secret she desperately wanted to be free of. Weeks later, on a beach in France, Lucas Moreau discovered the balloon and immediately emailed the attached address, sparking an intense friendship between the two teens. Now, fourteen years later, Emmie is hiding the fact that she’s desperately in love with Lucas. She has pinned all her hopes on him and waits patiently for him to finally admit that she’s the one for him. So dedicated to her love for Lucas, Emmie has all but neglected her life outside of this relationship—she’s given up the search for her absentee father, no longer tries to build bridges with her distant mother, and lives as a lodger to an old lady she barely knows after being laid off. And when Lucas tells Emmie he has a big question to ask her, she’s convinced this is the moment he’ll reveal his feelings for her. But nothing in life ever quite goes as planned, does it? Filled with heart and humor, Dear Emmie Blue “beautifully captures the heartache and frustrations of carrying our teenaged selves with us wherever we go” (Anstey Harris, author of Goodbye Paris) that is perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Evvie Drake Starts Over. Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020 Verified Purchase Guys, This is my favorite book so far this year! Oh, the feels! So many feels. It was everything I wanted it to be. There were tears, sad moments, happy moments, don't-leave types of moments, and ecstatic moments. As a lover of romance, Dear Emmie Blue melted my heart. My kindle is full of highlights. So many favorite one-liners <3. So what's the book about? I almost don't want to tell you. I want you to experience it yourself. But in case you're wondering...... Emmie Blue is turning thirty. Her life is not where she envisioned it. Far from it. She is living in Louise's house. An older lady, who rents a room and is as quiet as Emmie. She's working at a hotel instead of working at a high school. She never met her father and her mother is as warm as a cactus (please forgive me cactuses for the comparison). Emmie's mother has been in and out of Emmie's life as far as she can remember. Emmie's best friend is Lucas. The boy who found her balloon all those years back. The boy who knows her secret. The boy who is now a man and whom Emmie has fallen in love with without telling him. The man who shares her own birthday. The man she's waiting for him to notice he loves her back. When Lucas asks Emmie to meet him in France (he lives there, she lives in the UK) for a special dinner, Emmie thinks this is it. He's finally going to pop the question. Yet, this is not what happens. Instead, her heart is broken. With the news he gives her, she knows things will change between them. Dear Emmie Blue was a charming, endearing story with lovable characters. Ballon Boy stole my heart. At the 53% mark, I hit my forehead when I finally realized what my heart was telling me to be true. The secondary characters were so well done. Rosie was the best girlfriend someone could have. Her sincerity, no-nonsense personality and her humor made her stellar. Fox's company complimented the trio well. Louise also found a place in my heart. She was a quiet presence until she wasn't anymore. "I support you and accept you, even though you're a wreck." Dear Emmie Blue is a road to self-discovery for our main character, Emmie... A time to grow and do some needed soul-searching. To stand up and become stronger. To learn that despite adversity and a lousy past, you can be better. You can be happy ❤️❤️❤️ Cliffhanger: No 5/5 Fangs LB 5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read this year! Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2020 Verified Purchase This is hands down the best book I have read so far this year, and I am confident it will be one of the top books of my whole year. Thank you to Atria Books and Netgalley for this advanced e-book - I picked it up to read right away, and then spent months stewing on how I could possibly do justice to writing a review of this book, but here goes! At 16, Emmie Blue releases a balloon with a piece of paper that has a secret and her email address written on it - the balloon travels from England to the coast of France, where it is found by Lucas, who sends her an email. This starts an intense friendship, and it's not long before Emmie is head over heels for Lucas. Flash forward to when the two are 30, where Emmie has spent the past 14 years pining for Lucas to the point of neglecting all other aspects of her life. So, of course, when Lucas asks her to be the best woman at his upcoming wedding, we can all imagine Emmie's complete shock and heartache. This sets the book into motion, and as we move forward, we see glimpses of Emmie and Lucas's past and how it has led them to where they are today. I don't want to give any more plot details away, but I will say that nothing is as it seems. This book is a love story, yes. But it's an unexpected love story in so many ways. And even more than that, it's a story of coming into your own, learning to live and enjoy life - even if it is not with who you want - and coming to love yourself. If you loved Evvie Drake Starts Over, you will certainly be a fan of this one as well. I have to be honest here for a moment - when I first started this book, I really, really did not like Emmie. After reading some more and pondering on why, I realized I didn't like Emmie because she reminded me of parts of myself. She reminded me of parts that I don't like about myself and times that I hope I've grown from and left in the past. From this moment on, I latched onto Emmie and her story and joined her for the ride - it can be jarring when we see ourselves in a character, especially aspects we don't like, but when we can see the growth that character goes through, and hopefully see that for ourselves as well, then it just makes the reading experience so much more than just a fun read. It brings it to life! This book is hilarious and heart-warming. I laughed out loud and I cried real tears. I devoured this book in 2 days, reading way past my bedtime, during breaks at work, even while walking to and from the car! I couldn't put it down, and I have shouted from the rooftops that this book should be in everyone's hands this summer. I hope you give Emmie a chance and read this novel that I can't wait to pick up again myself. Even though I received a free e-ARC of this book, I also purchased a hard copy when it was released - I just know that I will read it again and again. Gabrielle Grosbety 5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, heartwarming story of finding one's self Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020 Verified Purchase "I walk and walk, aimless, stopping only once to look up at the sky, stars like a spray of white paint on black silk, and I want to ask it why? Why did you pull me toward him, for miles and miles, if this is how it ends up?" Dear Emmie Blue, this is my review. I’d care to venture a guess why things don't work out with a concrete initial reason sometimes: it’s because one has to go through a process of self-awakening and soul searching first to discover that sometimes what we want isn’t exactly what it seems, what we had in mind, or what’s best for us. That is exactly what lovable Emmie Blue does in this beautiful story that floated into my life with the keen courage and conviction of a red ballon that has just traveled a long way, like the balloon Emmie lets sail off with a note attached on her sixteenth birthday. Lucas, a boy that’s also sixteen and in fact shares the same birthday with Emmie, finds the balloon on the seashore in France, having just moved from England. The two become fast, inseparable friends over shared playlists, marmite, and conversations that feel and happen as easy and natural as breathing. However, years later, at age 30 on both of their birthdays, Emmie finds herself across the table from Lucas at the idyllic, lavish restaurant they go to yearly to mark the special occasion of their birthdays. The air is heavy with anticipation, you can just feel it gather with expectation, as he’s about to ask her a big question. Except the question isn’t what she thinks. And she’s at first heartbrokenly devastated that he’s in fact getting married and has asked her to be his best woman, as she’s secretly in love with him, but would never tell him for fear of ruining the friendship they have built over the years. Lucas is her everything in terms of her support system, and his older brother, Eliot, was too, before a night that ruins everything and betrays Emmie’s trust indelibly painfully in him, as she already has a removed mother, father she doesn’t know, and feels like she doesn’t fit into the happy, glowing, put together woman around her at Lucas’ bride’s bridal party who have a new nauseatingly sugary anecdote for how much their partner still loves them even if they’re “a wreck” or have a “blighted tomato nose.” "I am enough." In these moments, Emmie felt impeccably real as someone who feels like it’s hard to see who people truly are if they’re eternally putting a positive spin on things that don’t come as a given in Emmie’s life or feel as easy and light-hearted to achieve. She feels small and insignificant, minimized by these people with their larger than life stories, a dusting of a discrete line leftover on a chalkboard, when she recognizes that she isn’t quite where she wants to be yet in life and in love. And that’s hard to be questioned about by other people because it invariably makes you question yourself and if you’re lovable, which is unbearably tough to confront because it speaks to your core, which wants to be loved more than anything with a fierceness and a special kind of protection, and also has surrendering moments of being fragile and rising moments of being strong. But when you give pieces of yourself to somebody you hope they’ll hold them sacredly in their hands and Emmie hasn’t always experienced that, which makes her more cautious as she has been through some emotionally irreparable, life-changing events, which are importantly explored to a point that I want to heartily embrace her. This is an important, poignantly rich study of finding authentic love within one’s self, an uplifting, spry hope that has “feathers” like Emily Dickinson once said, watching how friendships change and are put to the test even when it feels hard and complicated to be there for someone, and realizing that what we thought could be true could change in the Joan Didion coined "ordinary instant" or more gradually be built up to change and evolve over time. CharlotteReader 5.0 out of 5 stars Unrequited love at its finest! Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020 Verified Purchase 5+ stars!!! Oh my! I’ve been on a roll lately with awesome books back to back. Truthfully, I’ve had Emmie Blue on my wish list for a while now but hesitated to pick it up due the hefty price. I had just finished one awesome book and needed my next fix. I’m so glad I decided to purchase this book because it was sooooo worth it. My heart was in my throat the entire time I read through Emmie Blue. The way it began...the devastating news from Emmie’s best friend and crush, Lucas. How things unfolded...The angst was so unreal between Emmie, Lucas, Elliot (you know how much I love my angst - the more the better). Sometimes I love a book so much that I wish...I just wish the author would keep on writing. One thing the author captured so well in this book was the loneliness that Emmie felt from never knowing her father, her absentee mom, from feeling left out whenever she was around Lucas and his friends, and of course not having Lucas around. My gah...I think I cried so many times!! Don’t let this sway you from reading though...although parts may have felt sad, it wasn’t done in a depressing way. I mostly loved the emotions it evoked out of me. So if you’re ready for an unrequited love story and a roller coaster ride, this one is for you. SUSAN PETERSON TOP 1000 REVIEWER 5.0 out of 5 stars Heart, humor, emotional Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020 Verified Purchase I’m finding myself drawn to books right now with characters who have been hurt or disappointed or are struggling somehow, and by the end of the story they have been healed and transformed, via a journey that is difficult but uplifting and hopeful. This book is is brimming with heart, humor, and complicated emotions. Dear Emmie Blue is a book I picked up without knowing much about it. I hadn’t read any blurbs, but it was a book that I’d seen on a few “best of” lists. I loved the title and the cover, and the back copy—“I think of my balloon, and how far it traveled across those inky waves. I think of the wide world out there and all its possibilities. Maybe one day I’ll see the Northern Lights. And someday I’ll fall in love.” I fell completely in love with this book of fate and dreams, pain and disappointment, love and family—and removing the barriers that keep us from finding happiness. Emmie Blue is lovely and relatable and sad and lonely and funny and heartbroken—I loved her with all my heart, her journey felt personal to me. Diana Ellis 5.0 out of 5 stars Loved Every Second!! Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2020 Verified Purchase This book was so much more than I thought it was going to be. Emmie had so many things happen in her life that I just was not expecting when I started reading. I don’t want to spoil the experience for anyone by giving details away. However, I will say I went through every possible emotion reading this and I loved every second of it! Thank you Lia Louis for this amazing work of art you have given to us! Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2020 Verified Purchase Although the story started out a little slow, I was curious enough to keep on reading. Soon, I was so engrossed in the story, that I could not put it down. I read the book in a little over a day. It was so enjoyable, and such a sweet book, especially in these awful days, where we are stuck at home and hear nothing but terrible news on TV and on social media. Meg R 5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Me Want More! Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020 Verified Purchase I simply adored this book! It touched on real, hard things that happen in people’s lives and the importance of having a few quality people around you. It showed the ups and downs true friendships go through and the changes that occur, especially those busy years of your 20s and 30s. Even though the book was centered around some tough stuff, it was “feel good” enough without being too unrealistic. The characters were built slowly and evolved perfectly. This is the kind of book I wish was longer so I could get to know the characters better. Looking forward to finishing it I would definitely recommend.
